Dear John (the movie)

Summary
The beginning of the movie differs greatly from the book. The book starts off with John reminiscing about the past but the movie begins with John already somewhat in the past. It jumps almost immediately into the part where John and Savannah meet. A Huge difference between the book and the movie is a character named Tim. In the book he is someone that Savannah grew up with and he is about her age.He is described as looking middle aged. In the movie he actually is middle aged and has a son. He is autistic and resembles the character that is briefly spoken about named Alan. Alan is also autistic but he also grew up with Savannah and he is only mentioned briefly in the book to explain why Savannah wants to major in special education.

Reaction
This is how the movie Dear John begins, with John's voice over reading this quote. It is completely different from how the book begins. It makes up from the movie's lack of background because is jumps almost immediately into Savanna and john meeting. The book begins by explaining John and his fathers unusual relationship.

Summary
The first section of this book is a lot different from the first section of the movie. They even start differently. The book starts off with a guy named John Tyree. He is reminiscing about time he spent six years earlier with a girl named Savannah. He then begins talking about high school and how he ended up in the position he is in in the present. He joined the army after high school and one day during his time on leave he meets Savannah. He saved her bag from ending up at the bottom of the ocean and since then they've been inseparable.

Reaction
This quote is also the first line in the book. It's different from the first line in the movie which talks about coins. The movie chose to begin with something that introduced the relationship between John and his father. The book begin with introducing the relationship between John and Savannah.
